THE ARTISTS

The gallery offers its exhibition spaces to both renown and emerging artists that represent the artistic identity of different areas in Tuscany. This results in a wide variety of styles and even ways to understand the role of the artist and art itself. If the selection of pieces goes from the representation of the local landscape until abstract art, the common ground of them could be defined as a certain warm atmosphere that permeates every painting as well as the “handmade touch”: making art as a path to find a personal language and not only as a result of a concept.

Because of its location in the heart of Chianti area, la Bottega can be considered as an important platform for its artists which gain international exposure, exposition experience together with a variety of other styles and techniques.

Each artist offers works with a unique style, technique and choice of materials, of different dimensions and prices.

He has been member of several artistic groups and has exhibited his work in many personal and collective exhibitions, both nationally and internationally, obtaining prizes and awards. One of the main features of his painting is a sharp representational clarity, which reveals itself with the same intensity, in both his rendering of form and his translation of colour. The artist loves painting Tuscany, the hills of Chianti, vineyards, villages overlooking the sea, waterways with fishing boats reflected in the calm waters with their bright hues. He carefully renders every detail, masterfully balancing them in the structure of each composition tastefully orchestrating tones and colours.

BOTTI Giancarlo

Born in Montevarchi, 1947. Giancarlo started painting at a very young age; his path to becoming a painter was done in a self taught way. His profession in the fashion industry enriches his innate curiosity, which drives him to explore different pictorial methods, starting with watercolors up to the current mixed media paintings where the warm colors of Tuscany blend and play with the tridimensional furrows of the carved wooden base. “When I paint I think of navigating in another world, even if it is from this world that I look for inspiration, more from colors than shapes or subjects”.

CHIARAMONTI Alessandro

Born in 1983, He discovered the beauty of art all by himself. Having lived near Montelupo Fiorentino he had the opportunity to get in touch with the working of clay, until art literally bursted out of his hands. Increasingly intrigued and stimulated by this world, he decided to undertake a self-taught training course, learning from various local sculptors, until the moment he moved, as an apprentice-friend, to the home of a well-known artist ( whose name he promises not to mention). Once he acquired the art, he carried it out on his own, until he took it to the heart of Chianti, where he currently lives. “Mud and Soul”, is the name that the artist uses to define the essence of his art: starting from mud (clay) and transforming it into an eternal human feeling (the soul).

DE MATTEIS Domenico

Nico De Matteis, born in 1967, showed a keen interest in the visual arts and music since being a child: he started his studies at “Duccio di Buoninsegna” Art School in Siena, then attended the Brera Academy of Fine Arts in Milan and the Academy of Florence, from which he graduated in 1992. In the following years he worked as a sculptor for well-known Florentine artistic foundries, creating works of various sizes and types, both for Italy and for the foreign market. A life choice aimed at returning to Nature, as a daily practice but most of all as an inner practice, the one of the soul, leads his current research: now the material used is polychrome terracotta with which Nico investigates the shapes, volumes and the light. He lives and works in Montemagni, a small village town in the countryside between Certaldo and Gambassi Terme, in the province of Florence.

FELICI Ugo

Ugo Felici was born in Pesaro (Italy) on May 31st 1954. Since he was a child he has always shown a particular natural talent for painting and art, but it was in 1974 that this natural talent turned into a passion to which he very enthusiastically devoted himself. His classical studies permeate his whole production and represent a fundamental trait of his painting; they gave him the possibility of broadening his cultural interests and widening the horizons in his own mind. In 1999 he meets Professor Franco Fiorucci with whom he studies in depth various expressive/painting techniques, from drawing to painting with oil paint and watercolours. He transmits his own feelings and emotions with the paintbrush strokes on the canvas surface. A special attention has always been dedicated to the study of the figure through drawing and modelling. In these last years his personal and collective art exhibitions have been very successful.

FRATINI Ilario

Ilario Fratini was born in 1947 in Marciano. He has exhibited in numerous painting shows obtaining promising results which have inspired him on to follow his own personal figurative experiments. His association with major Umbrian and Tuscan artists has not only refined his technical skills, using acrylic paint applied with a palette knife and spatula, but has also inspired him to abandon his figurative representation for a more essential vision. His rapid palette knife pares down the landscapes to their essence without ever completely losing their panoramic structure. He has won numerous first prizes in competitions in Montepulciano, Cortona, Poppi, Spoleto, Talla Bastia,Assisi and many other cities.

GHEZZI Roberto

Born in Cortona in 1978, Roberto Ghezzi learned the rudiments of the various painting techniques from his grandfather, a skilled carver and painter, and from his father, a fine watercolourist, developing from an early age his drawing and painting skills. From 2007 the solar landscapes that for many years had colored his paintings leave room for figures that slowly disintegrate in suffused interiors. In every piece of Roberto’s work falls a veil of mystery that, as he likes to emphasize, does not obscure the reality but reveals it. Today Roberto conceives art as a fine balance between the inside and outside of the human being. He defines himself as a figurative of the soul, and would like to always be able to depict reality, not the one that can be seen with the eyes alone, but the reality that his soul “feels”, shaped by memories, smells, passions, hopes, dreams, feelings…

LIMA Amissao

With a degree from the Academy of Fine Arts in Ravenna and under the guidance of Prof. Umberto Folli, Lima expresses his art using mixed media; powdered oil colors blended with glue, gesso or sand, and applied to a masonite board with the use of the spatula and brush. Amongst the numerous prizes won in the many art competitions in which he has participated, most notably is the First Prize in the prestigious national “Arte e Dintorni” competition in Emilia Romagna. In Lima’s painting you can note the synthesis of form. He is interested in the strong plasticity and surface of his works, which he purposefully stacks one on top of the other, or carves onto with stones or tools. His studio is a chaos of creative experimentation and fantasy; an archive of hundreds of works. His palette is a rainbow of cans of powdered color ready to be applied in a myriad of ways.

MONECHI Giuliano

Monechi explores the world of painting and crafts from an early age. In 1970 he started his artistic activity by attending several Florentine artisan shops. The teachings and experiences acquired at the workshops of potters, sculptors and decorators still feed his research and his artistic production, initially focused on wood and terracotta sculpture but evolving through long periods of reflection, experimentation and also of stasis. Today Giuliano has left sculpting behind but one can certainly guess its reminiscence from his current relief painting technique which shows Giuliano’s desire to get out of the two-dimensional plane. The artist talks about his current pictorial technique: “Even though this often forces my work to an unnatural rigidity, it also allows me to acquire expressiveness and strength, and in some works, to approach those surreal atmospheres that have long fascinated me by the Sienese and Florentine fourteenth-century paintings.

Although he spaces along different times and places, his heart is often attracted to the old countryside with its ancient and dilapidated farmhouses that show to the eyes of the beholder the beauty of times that have gone by.

His paintings depict nuanced and suspended shapes in a dimension of silence. In his still life painting the main subject remains the sunlight. Since 1960 he has exhibited in solo exhibitions and participated in numerous exhibitions in Italy and in other countries. VANNINI Secondo

Secondo Vannini passes his youth drawing any object that catches his eye, stimulated by the encounter with master Elio Morri. During his early adulthood he continues his artistic training independently by visiting several local art exhibitions, it is then that by seeing the paintings of Edward Pazzini the artist feels to have found a master. He starts subsequently to paint with oil colors finding each time his gentle tones and the decisive brushstrokes that are reminiscent of the great masters of the 900’s. While the public’s acceptance increases Secondo has the opportunity to meet other local artists and thus to nurture his artistical research, in the meantime he continuously gains more success among the audience and critics. The art of Secondo cannot be separated of his land and origins. His colors and thick brushstrokes speak of his origins in the countryside around Rimini and are the result of both the tradition and of his talent for making “his” the landscape that surrounds him.

VARRICCHIO Giada

Giada Varricchio was born in Siena in 1994. She completed her studies at the Duccio di Boninsegna Art Institute with a diploma as a pictorial decorator. After a few years Giada starts distancing herself from the classical figurative style in order to explore a semi-abstract perspective, in which she prefers the representation of abstract landscapes and floral subjects. Her art is delicate and pungent at the same time. The soft Tuscan hills are a source of inspiration for the artist who, in constant mutation, tries to derive its beauty by enhancing its flowers and nature. Some words from the artist: “There are times when I have to stop, turn my brain off for a few moments and lie in the open air because everything around me seems too heavy. I look up and see the light blue, the blue, the yellow, and all the colors that nature can offer me while I can, as well, melt in it. I feel free.”

VINATTIERI Massimo

Born in Signa in 1956. “Thirty-five years of training”; This s how Massimo Vinattieri summarizes his long career as a painter. A rather simplistic judgment that exudes the rigorous and relentless self-critical sense of this reserved and solitary artist, the polar opposite of many of his artist colleagues. In truth all his work, from the seventies to the present, witnesses his genuine emotions as a painter. A painter who, starting from fauve influences, through suggestive chromatics focusing on dualisms of yellow and red, has built dream and fairy worlds. Strong and vigorous visions that with the passage of time have stripped away every vehemence, leading to a lyrical abstraction made of chords suggested in a subtle range of colors silhouetted on a gray-almost transparent backdrop. A type of painting that has close ties with reality, but at the same time seems to keep wooing her away through metaphors composed of rhythmic and musical similarities and that due to their evanescence seem to go beyond the metaphysical ‘sense’, proposing a relationship with space so daring to challenge the sense of infinity.
